What’s in a name? Not what you think.  If you think Jazz and you throw in the word Birdland, you would probably think 315 West 44th street, between 8th and 9th avenues on the west side of Manhattan.

However, if you say Birdland and throw in the city of Berkeley, California, you would go to a quaint new venue called Birdland Jassista Social Club at  1733 Sacramento St Berkeley, CA 94703.  Birdman Michael and his dog Pinky host a great get together every Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Birdland Jazzista Social Club aka Birdland Jazz and BBQ and MultiCulti Grill was originally founded for no other purpose than to have a bbq on Memorial Day 2010; and it  never stopped. The core purpose is still to eat barbecue every Friday evening with friends and neighbors, gossip about the latest news and happenings, and listen to some live music.

I have the fortune to be there Saturday evening with a group of killer musicians, The handsome and talented Jeff Chambers on bass, amazing Jason Lewis extraordinaire on drums and fabulous Walter Bankovitch on piano. All three of these men have toured and played around the world.

What a yummy eve it will be!
